IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

The winners of the 2014 Sicilian "Maratona alla Filippide", a unique event that celebrates the run from Marathon to Athens that the herald Pheidippides covered in 490 bC to deliver news of the military victory against the Persians. This no-frills point-to-point marathon starts at 4:30 in the morning, there is no entry fee, runners have no sense of time nor distance (electronics, watches or any time-measuring devices are prohibited; mile markers are non existent; refreshements are randomly placed along the course), ends on a beach, and winners get a laurel wreath. Disregard the photobomb.

ITALIAN ART CITIES MARATHON SERIES

"Venicemarathon" joined the new project created by the Italian Athletics Federation, which unites the marathons in the Art Cities: Venice, Rome, Florence and Turin. "Venicemarathon" was represented by the vicepresident Stefano Fornasier: "Since its first edition in 1986 Venicemarathon has always recognized the beauty and the artistic treasures of its territory as major value to be used to set up the event. We are therefore very glad about this project since the promotion in Italy and abroad is very important for Venicemarathon and the cooperation with the other great Italian marathons will help to support the union between sport and culture, enhance the value of the territory and promote the marathon as a healthy way of living. Venicemarathon will take place on October 26th and it will be its twenty-ninth edition but of course it is already pinned on the important 30th anniversary. The Marathons in the Art Cities series will enhance this important celebration".

These are the main principles of the marathons in the Art Cities Series: a) creation of a unique format that combines the attention to the performance of the elite athletes, with the expression of a right lifestyle from a sport, a social and a healthy point of view; together with the tourist value of the areas, the connection on the social networks and the recall of special moments experienced during the races; b) promotion of the marathon series in Italy and abroad, in order to increase the national and international participation, which goes side by side with the promotion activity of each marathon based on a year schedule planned in advance; and c) extension of the promotion to a target which is not interested to the distance now but could be later on; starting therefore a process to help the participants in the 10k and half marathons to reach the marathon distance with the correct training and the right support.

WHERE TO RUN IN NAPOLI

One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and the one is the largest historic city center in Europe, Napoli is synonymous with pizza, which originated in the city, is credited with the invention of the mandolin, as well as notable contributions to opera. It is also a beautiful place to run. Go to the seaside promenade, the "lungomare", and run along the streets via Caracciolo and via Partenope from the port of Santa Lucia to the Mergellina. There is also a park behind via Caracciolo called the Villa Comunale which is also a good spot for running.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

SALOMON SENSE PRO - The S-Lab Sense series is Salomon's most serious group of shoes, the Sense series inspired by key takeaways from the S-Lab. The Sense Pro is a hybrid in a couple of ways, straddling road and trail, as well as training and racing. The upper is closed mesh with Salomon's cagelike Sensifit system of welded overlays and the Quicklace set up that is well known to fans. The midsole is a low profile EVA that has 6 millimeter geometry, what Salomon calls "Propriotection" shields the foot without losing the feel of the trail. Add to that a two density foam, and the shoe transitions quite well, whether on or off road. The outersole is a low profile, but surprisingly toothy lugged sole, that offers good up and down traction, but can do a decent job on roads as well. The versatility of the shoe is its real strength, but the features packed into the shoe each contribute much to the whole.

Testers: "First thought is that they are light for a trail shoe, but beefy for a racer. Of course, on the other side of that coin is the protection from pointy things set to do me harm. The upper is well built, fits well, and the lacing snugs quickly. Tough, grippy, and what I expect from Salomon."

Sizes: Men 7–13, 14; Women 6–11
Weight: 10.2 oz. (men's size 11); 8.1 oz. (women's size 8)
Shape: semi-curved
Construction: Strobel slip-lasted, EVA Strobel board
Recommended for: medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics to mild overpronation
