IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

The "Cronoscalata delle Alpi Apuane" is a competitive run that starts from the Museo del marmo (Marble museum) in Carrara, in Tuscany. It features a magnificent course through the same Fantiscritti quarries that in the year 1501 provided Michelangelo with the block of marble he used to create the statue of David, one of the masterpieces of the Renaissance and now one of the iconic symbols of Italy. The prizes for this event are small marble trophies, here displayed on a block of marble at the finish line in the quarry. Photo by Giulia Bianchi.

WHERE TO RUN IN LAMA DEI PELIGNI

Located in the Province of Chieti, in the Abruzzo region, Lama dei Peligni is part of the Majella National Park (Parco Nazionale della Majella). The park contains about 500 kilometres of hiking trails through the mountains, cave paintings in Grotta Sant'Angelo and Grotta del Cavallone (the latter being one of the deepest caves in Europe open to the public). When in Lama dei Peligni run along the mountain road connecting this town with Palena. The road is characterized by rocks bordering the whole lenght of the course.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

SALMING DISTANCE - Salming is a brand that is new to the United States of America, by way of Gothenburg, Sweden. The Distance is a shoe intended for mileage, though it tips the scale in the performance end of the spectrum. The upper is a two layer construction, wide open mesh with a gauze-like outer layer. Welded overlays at the toe and lace throat, a traditional heel counter, and sueded overlays at the ankle collar rounding out the package. The midsole is injection molded EVA with a responsively firm feel and protective cushioning, not unique but effective. The outersole is thin carbon rubber in the heel, blown rubber in the forefoot, segmented for flexibility, and opened in the lower wear portions for weight savings. The end product is a light shoe that works well for faster running, some of your racing - especially in the middle ranges, and daily training for the peppier paces.

Testers: "Very nice fit, roomy up front but not enough to be baggy. Cushioned but not mushy, responsive in a subtle way. Does the job without getting in the way."

Sizes: Men 7.5-14; Women 5.5-10.5
Weight: 9.4 oz. (men's size 11); 7.6 oz. (women's size 8)
Shape: semicurved
Construction: Strobel slip-lasted
Recommended for: medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics
