IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

Participants on a scale before the start of the "Gara a peso" in Prato, Tuscany, where 3-runner teams are classified based on the sum of their finish time - but within their total weight category, rather than by age division.

WHERE TO RUN IN LOCRI

If you are in Locri, near Reggio Calabria, run along the seaside. The course is paved, not crowded during the winter time, 3k in lenght. I usually run about 15k by covering the same course back and forth a few times. On the course there are two water fountains, but no public restrooms.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

PUMA FAAS 500 v4 - The Faas 500 is the flagship of the Faas line, thanks to its versatile design and good level of cushioning. Round 4 receives a complete overhaul, and in a bit of a surprise, an adjustment to the price. The upper is a light closed mesh with welded overlays at the toe and saddle, a stitched thermoplastic lending support to the heel. The midsole is a newly redesigned compression molded EVA of the familiar Faas foam, known for its lightweight ride and flexibility, and 4 millimeter geometry. The outersole features just enough carbon rubber to bolster the toughened foam, with better coverage - for durability - than round 3. The bottom line is that the Faas 500 v4 is a light, reasonably cushioned shoe, with a fairly peppy feel, that can double as a trainer as well as a racer, or fill a slot in a regular training rotation with other shoes.

Testers: "Decent fit with good snugness over the instep. Enough cushion and pretty light for some of my faster running. Good solid shoe in the rotation."

Sizes: Men 7-12, 13; Women 5.5-10
Weight: 9.5 oz. (men's size 11); 7.4 oz. (women's size 8)
Shape: semicurved
Construction: Strobel slip-lasted, EVA Strobel board
Recommended for: medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics

THIS MONTH'S RECOMMENDED EVENTS

OCTOBER 4 - The Mezza maratona dei castelli romani is half marathon near Roma, in the fertile volcanic area famous for its castles. Since the ancient Roman era, it was an area frequented by the noblemen of Rome for its fresher summer climate, and the tradition was followed by the Popes which still have their summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, on the Lake Albano. The half marathon winds around this very lake.

OCTOBER 11 - It does not get more Tuscany than this. The Volterra-San Gimignano is a point-to-point 30k race, changing direction each year. The highly panoramic course starts from the main square in Volterra, one of the most important Etruscan centers, winds through the rolling postcard-worthy Tuscan hills, and arrives in San Gimignano, a small walled medieval hill town, famous for its Vernaccia wine and its medieval tower-houses.

OCTOBER 18 - A race fit for a king. This is also the translation of Una corsa da re, a half marathon held in the gardens and park grounds of one of the residences of the Royal House of Savoy. The event also features shorter courses - 4k and 10k. Restored to the Baroque magnificence that inspired its construction in the mid-1600s by Duke Carlo Emanuele II of Savoy, the monumental estate of the Reggia di Venaria, located just outside Turin, is included in the Unesco Heritage List and is one of Italy's most visited cultural sites.

OCTOBER 25 - From Stra, a small town along the Riviera del Brenta (where rich and noble Venetians built their vacation mansions in the 18th century) to the center of Venezia, the Venicemarathon features a unique and unforgettable 26.2 miles course. In the last portion, marathoners run next to the Giudecca Canal and Punta della Dogana, crossing the Grand Canal on a pontoon bridge especially built for the race, and passing by Piazza San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale on a scenic course facing the lagoon.
