WHERE TO RUN IN CASERTA

Given its vastness, the park of the Reggia di Caserta (Royal palace) allows runners to train on various types of terrain - asphalt, trails or grass routes, both uphill and downhill. The courses are both shaded or under the sun, and the main loop is approximately seven and a half kilometers in lenght. The area of the park called "Giardino Inglese" (English Garden) features a tough 2.5k course with rapid inclinations changes, ideal for those training for uphill competitions. The park is well supplied with water fountains and restrooms. At any time of the day you will see runners. The only issue is that the park closes around 5/6pm each afternoon.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

361° SPIRE - As a new brand, all 361° shoes are new to our market, but they are not unproven, having done factory work for other top brands. As its name suggests, the Spire is 361°'s pinnacle shoe. The upper features quality stretch mesh, with a combination of traditional synthetic leather/suede and no-sew overlays. The midfoot benefits from a secure saddle, while the external thermoplastic heel counter keeps the rearfoot aligned. The midsole is where this shoe really shines: a new compound called Quickfoam produces a comfy ride and makes the shoe more responsive and bouncy than expected. The outersole is a typical setup: carbon rubber in the heel, blown rubber in the forefoot, and a thermoplastic shank for torsional support. The finish work here polishes the shoe with some quality touches, and the ride points to even better shoes to come.

Testers: "Very comfortable fit with good quality linings. Has a very smooth feel to the ride: plenty of cush but with really good rebound. They are really nice to run in."

NOVEMBER 1 - The Ecomaratona del Barbaresco e del tartufo bianco d'Alba in the province of Cuneo is a panoramic full and a half marathon held during the International White Truffle Fair, dedicated to the aromatic subterranean "trifola d'Alba Madonna" mushroom found mainly in the Langhe and Montferrat areas of the Piedmont northern region, also home of the Barbaresco wines.  NOVEMBER 7 - Dubbed a "supercompetitive" event, the Cronoscalata al Cavallo is a trail mountain race, all uphill. The distance is only 1.8k (a little more than a mile) but the altitude difference is one third of a mile (520 meters) with up to 50% degrees inclination - the course winds up the Santa Felicita valley, from Romano d'Ezzelino, near Vicenza, all on the Sentiero del Cavallo (the Horse Trail). At the top of the mountain, the finishers happily strike a cow bell that awaits them to celebrate the feat.

NOVEMBER 15 - The Val di Merse ultramarathon trail course winds through one of the most unexplored nature reserves of Tuscany. Available distances are 52k, 42k, 20k, and 10k, with courses open also to walkers. The 10k trail starts from Stigliano, while all the other distances will start from the Stadio di Rosia, in the city of Sovicille, and run to Siena. Val di Merse is situated at the outskirts of Siena and the forest is rich in biodiversity.

NOVEMBER 21 - "Nothing speaks more of Romagna than this bread of ours... it is a symbol that speaks of devotion to our land" wrote the famous Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli and the Corsa della piadina romagnola in Russi, near Ravenna, is dedicated to the thin Italian flatbread typically prepared in this region. A package of piadine is the coveted prize for all participants to this 7k event.

NOVEMBER 29 - The course of the Firenze Marathon takes participants by all those landmarks of singular beauty that have made Florence famous worldwide: views over the enchanting hills and countryside, and passing right by the cathedral square, Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio (to mention only just a few of historical importance), before entering the majestic Piazza Santa Croce. The road is entirely asphalted and ramp-free, except for the short, slightly sloping stretch of road at the start, and these characteristics make it a particularly fast route.
