IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

Participants at the "Ecomaratona del Barbaresco e del tartufo bianco d'Alba" enjoy a glass of the renown Barbaresco red wine during the race. Made from the Nebbiolo grapes, this wine is relatively new on the viticulturist scene, having been developed only in 1894: before that date, Nebbiolo grapes from the Barbaresco area were mostly sold to Barolo wine producers. The running event celebrates also the Alba delicate white truffle, another precious product of this area of Piemonte.

WHERE TO RUN IN BOLOGNA

I am lucky enough to live next to a wonderful park called Parco dei Cedri. This park has a "percorso vita", a curated track with different exercise stations, and even some uphill sections. This makes it ideal to train for any kind of road races.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

ALTRAS TORIN 2.0 - Altra is known for Zero Drop running shoes that match the shape of your foot. The Torin was the first of the Altra shoes to dip a toe into the mainstream running shoe scene. Round 1.0 used a traditional approach with materials, but used a flat last with an oversized toebox, and gained a following of runners. Version 2.0 steps things up a notch. The upper is a closed mini-mesh with no-sew overlays, minimal heel and toe structure, though enough for the job, and a smooth interior - quite roomy, especially up front. Taking a page from every brand, they have a proprietary midsole foam - theirs is called A-bound, and it is nicely resilient, with good cushioning underfoot, and of course, zero drop geometry. The outersole is carbon rubber, but used sparingly, a strip on the lateral side, at the heel, under the metatarsals and at the big toe, the remainder of the sole is toughened A-bound, and it does the trick, quite well. With attributes like these, the Torin is clearly a shoe worth considering. Updates the Torin 1.5.

Testers: "Very comfortable. The fit has ample room for the toes and is secure enough in the heel. Plenty of bounce and pretty stable. I liked the feel."

Sizes: Men 7-13, 14, 15; Women 6-11
Weight: 9.8 oz. (men's size 11); 7.6 oz. (women's size 8)
Shape: semi-curved
Construction: Strobel slip-lasted, EVA Strobel board
Recommended for: medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics to very mild overpronation

FEBRUARY 7 - The Mezza maratona internazionale delle due perle is a half marathon immersed in one of the most beautiful area in Italy: on one side, the sound of the sea, on the other the green pines of the local mountains. The route, relatively flat, with interesting curves and very light gradients, is however technical. It departs from Santa Margherita Ligure and takes place in one of the most suggestive scenery in the world, with breathtaking views, including Portofino, the fishing village and vacation resort famous for its picturesque harbour.

FEBRUARY 14 - The Giulietta e Romeo halfmarathon takes place in the streets that gave birth to the love of Romeo and Juliet, in the narrow streets that have strengthened their unity and running by the monuments that are true symbols of Shakespeare's tragedy. Combined with the romantic expressions of the "Verona in Love" multiday fair and the incomparable charm of its market stalls arranged in a heart shape in the Piazza dei Signori, the 13.1 mile event is full of great opportunities to spend a special Valentine's Day with your significant other.

FEBRUARY 28 - Along with the one in Venice, the Carnevale in Viareggio is an event not to be missed. With its festively decorated carriages on display along the seaside promenade, it is the largest Italian folk event with a budget of 5 million euro per year, spawning a whole month of daytime and nighttime festivities with parades of allegorical floats, local parties, masked balls and festivals of all kinds. Run the Riocarneval, la Straviareggio in maschera, a 5k and 10k running event in costume on the local streets, then stay and join the Carnival parade with discounted tickets.
