IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

The Aosta Valley - an autonomous region in northwestern Italy, bordered by France to the west and Switzerland to the north - is famous for its mountains and its cheeses. Among these the Fontina, the cow's milk cheese used to prepare the fondue, with its distinctive intense flavor. Obtained during the Summer, when the cows are moved to an altitude of up to 700 meters and fed only with rich grass to give its aroma, Fontina cheese has been made in the Aosta Valley since the 12th century. Participants to the "Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc" in Chamonix can enjoy Fontina cheese at the race's refreshment table.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

MIZUNO WAVE SHADOW - The Wave Shadow is the replacement for the Sayonara series. While the Sayonara merged two previously well-loved shoes (the Precision and the Elixir, both longtime successes), the Shadow replaces a good shoe that never got the love it deserved. The upper is a mini-mesh with a stitched saddle that offers great midfoot support and a few welded overlays provide a little extra structure in strategic areas. The midsole may be the Shadow's secret weapon: it has a deceptively flexible and bouncy U4ic foam, which holds up well to high-mileage training. The outersole features a durable rubber compound which had a little extra cush to it. A textured pattern within the tread affords great grip, with the added benefit of being durable enough for everything we threw at the shoe. The Wave Shadow's performance, durability, and ride earned it our award as the Best Training Shoe.

Testers: "Roomy and airy over the toes, snug heel but without a lot of structure. Great for tempos and big miles. Ran some longer races with good results."

Weight: 10.2 oz. (men's size 11); 8.2 oz. (women's size 8)

THIS MONTH'S RECOMMENDED EVENT

FEBRUARY 4 - Experience local history by running in Arezzo the Su e giù per la Torre di Gnicche, a 12.5k run on the surrounding hills, among olive trees and vineyards, and passing by the tower named after Federigo Bobini, also known as "Gnicche". A ruthless bandit active in this area in the mid-1800s, Gnicche terrorized the area by mugging, stealing and killing people. Yet, he is said to have been a "gentleman bandit" for his galant behavior with women. He is regarded by some as a local Robin Hood, and by some as a bad example, so much that, in Arezzo, unruly kids nowadays are said to be "worst than Gnicche".
