RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

ON CLOUD X - On is a brand which has gained runners' attention through much hard work; an overnight success - almost a decade in the making. The Cloud X is a tempo shoe which is tough enough for running and training. The upper is an engineered mesh with a saddle and rear quarter of closed mesh, offering a secure and comfortable fit. The interior features sculpted foam which is thinned to save weight while conforming to the contours of the ankle and heel. The midsole is EVA Clouds which offers great protection in heel and a very firm and resilient ride in the forefoot. The outersole covers most of the forefoot with rubber as well as the highest wear areas in the heel with some mid-foot clouds of toughened foam. As a "go fast" shoe and long racer the Cloud X does an excellent job, especially for runners that are light on their feet. New shoe.

Testers: "Well cushioned, though springy instead of soft. Snug and supportive upper. It's a fast shoe, so it was good for tempo runs and even my longer races."

THIS MONTH'S RECOMMENDED EVENT

AUGUST 5 - Dedicated to Pheidippides, said to have run from Marathon to Athens to deliver news of the military victory against the Persians at the Battle of Marathon, the Maratona alla Filippide starts at 4:30 in the morning from Chiaramonte Gulfi, near Ragusa, in Sicily. Its peculiarity is that participants are not allowed to check watches, but have to run instead trusting their inner clocks like Philippides did in ancient times. As a bonus, at least for the Italians, the race ends in Punta Secca, in front of the house of the inspector Montalbano, the fictional detective protagonist of a popular Italian television series based on the novels of Andrea Camilleri.
