IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

Italians are known to be passionate. And when we deal with runners, the stereotype is also valid - one of the most recent proofs is a participant to this year's edition of a local race, showcasing as a bib a plastified picture of himself running the same event four decades earlier.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

NEW BALANCE 1600 V6 - The 1400 has been one of New Balance's most versatile racing products thanks to the straight forward approach of quality foam and a no-frills upper. Taking the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy, round 6 of the 1400 has the expected characteristics of the series with some new touches thrown in for good measure. The upper is a closed mini mesh, with just enough fused overlays to support the foot effectively, also giving the shoe a good aesthetic appearance. The RevLite midsole has always been the magic of the 1400 and it is lightly touched, with new compression molding, but the same familiar feel. The outersole is carbon rubber at heel and toe, with traction front and rear from softer and grippier rubber inserts. Fans of the 1400 will be pleased with the continued performance of this well-loved stalwart, and new runners will discover a versatile, lightweight racing and speedwork performer.

Testers: "Fit great and feel plenty light. Protective and springy to give me race day confidence over a broad range of distances."

THIS MONTH'S RECOMMENDED EVENT

DECEMBER 23 - The traditional running appointment for all Florentines in December is the Firenze-Fiesole-Firenze, a 16.5k very panoramic run that - as its title implies - goes from Firenze up to the hill town of Fiesole and back. And the turnaround point is definitely worth a visit. The first recorded mention of Fiesole dates back to 283 bC, when the town was conquered by the Romans, but it was probably founded in the IX century bC by looking at the remains of its ancient Etruscan walls. An independent powerful town for several centuries in the early Middle Ages, it was finally conquered by the Florentines in 1125 to became a getaway for the upper class of Firenze, and up to this day, Fiesole is still known for its very expensive residential properties with panoramic views over the whole Firenze.
