IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

Each year in Montepulciano, near Siena, teams of two participants - each defending the color of their neighborhood - compete in a medieval challenge named "Il bravėo delle botti". Although there is no wine in the barrels, the task is not an easy one, as the runners still need to push a 160-pound object as fast as possible on a 2k uphill course.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

NIKE ZOOM FLY - The Zoom Fly is a new performance shoe in the family of shoes Nike created for its attempt at a sub–2-hour marathon. The upper is a thin, engineered mesh that offers good support, wraps the foot securely without extra material, breathes well, and conforms nicely to hold the foot securely. The tongue is offset, snugging in near the base of the shin bone in front of the ankle, enhancing the fit. The midsole is a maximal design with a rather tall stack height - 33 millimeters - and a heel shaped to to optimize the heel-to-toe roll-through. A rigid plate embedded in the midsole material propels the foot, minimizing energy loss while also preserving the Lunarlon foam's longevity. The outersole features a traditional forefoot of thin blown rubber, with minimally applied carbon rubber in the heel and toughened foam managing the low-wear areas. The ride, performance, and innovation earned the Zoom Fly our award for Best Performance Shoe.

Testers: "Great firm cushion, effortlessly rolls through the stride. Good rebound, with a light and minimal upper."

THIS MONTH'S RECOMMENDED EVENT

MARCH 10 - The Corsa del tartufo marzuolo, a 10k fun run held in the small town of Cigoli di San Miniato, in the province of Pisa, is celebrating the local delicacy - the March truffle, here known as the "Little Prince of the Hills". The "tartufo marzuolo" is a small white truffle that can be digged from under pine trees in the Spring, rather than having to wait for the Fall. Known since the first Century, when the Greeks thought truffles were created by lightning striking the ground, truffle has been highly appreciated ever since for its aroma and its alleged aphrodisiac qualities.
