IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

The start of one of the first running events in Noli, on the coasts of the Liguria region, in a vintage photo dating back to 1977.

WHERE TO RUN IN PRATA D'ANSIDONIA

Start from Piazza della Memoria in Prata D'Ansidonia, in the province of L'Aquila, and go towards Castelnuovo. You will find the first houses and then you will run on the outskirts of the town on a small paved road (under the red zone). You will reach a dirt road - pebbles and grass - leading to the Regio Tratturo Borbonico trail, crossing through Peltuinum. The city of Peltuinum was founded between the I century bC and the I century aD in the territory inhabited by the Italic tribe of the Vestini. From here we run downhill along a trail and we get back on the paved road that brings us back to Piazza della Memoria in Prata d'Ansidonia, after about eight kilometers. A shorter course of four kilometers consists in reaching Peltuinum by following the very panoramic paved road, stopping at the archeological site and theater before heading back to Prata d'Ansidonia. If you are there visiting the area, do not miss the Camponeschi castle, the villages of Tussio and San Nicandro, the church of San Paolo a Peltuinum (very beautiful but unfortunately no longer accessible after the earthquake). You should also visit San Pio delle Camere and Prata d'Ansidonia itself.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

ON CLOUDSTER - The Cloudster was introduced as the third model for On, a durable, high-mileage shoe with basic credentials. Round two keeps the chassis, while adding some zing to the rest of the shoe. The upper is closed mesh in the rearfoot, and stitching reinforces the heel counter and midfoot. The forefoot is a unique, four-way stretch fabric that adjusts with the foot without squeezing or irritation. The midsole is compression-molded EVA foam, with 7mm geometry - fairly firm - but it acts more as a platform for the "clouds" (the outersole lugs). The Cloud technology of the outersole provides the unique ride here; it varies with each runner's stride, as the clouds compress and grip the teeth of the interior surfaces. The addition of the stretch upper, combined with the proven midsole/outersole setup has succeeded in providing a responsive shoe that can manage high mileage with ease.

Testers: "Feels light on the foot, lighter than it actually is. The fit is very accommodating, the stretch of the forefoot never restricts the foot, just supports it. They were great for my longest runs - really held up well."

Sizes: Men 8-12, 13, 14; Women 6-12
Weight: 12.4 oz. (men's size 11); 10.0 oz. (women's size 8)
Shape: semicurved
Construction: Strobel slip-lasted
Recommended for: medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics to very mild overpronation

THIS MONTH'S RECOMMENDED EVENTS

AUGUST 10 - The Alpago sky super 3 is a point-to-point 18.8k trail run taking place in Lamosano, near Belluno, and finishing in Chies d'Alpago. The non-marked course features breath-taking views over the local Prealps, the foothills at the base of the European Alps, with a 1-mile positive elevation.

AUGUST 16 - Each year in August the local tourist office in Corgnolo, near Udine, welcomes runners to the Marcia del toro (Running of the bull). Nothing to do with the Pamplona one - in this case the bulls are not running after the participants but slowly cooked for more than twenty hours on a spit during the annual "sagra" (food festival). The running event features three distances - 21k, 12k, and a shorter 7k course.

AUGUST 30 - The Maddalene sky marathon is a fascinating skyrunning event on the Maddalene mountains, on the linguistic and cultural border between the Val di Non, the Deutschnonsberg and the Val d'Ultimo valleys in the Trentino Alto Adige region. The course starts from Senale and follows the Italian Alpine Club trail n. 133 - it is slightly longer than a marathon (44.2k) with a 3000 meters positive elevation and a 3200 meters negative elevation.
