IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

To drive through the narrow Italian streets you need small cars, such as a Fiat 500. Considered the world first city car, this low-cost, practical, and iconic Italian automobile is often promoted to Official Race Vehicle and used to announce an incoming local running event. Even if, sometimes, the warning sign is larger than the car itself.

WHERE TO RUN IN RAVENNA

Starting from the athletic field in Ravenna, run to the close left bank of the Fiumi Uniti (united rivers). Continue running on the left towards the sea. Once you reach the river dam, cross and continue on the right bank in the same direction until you reach Lido di Dante and the seaside. Drink at the water fountain, then return on the same course to finish back at the athletic field in Ravenna.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

SKECHERS GORUN ULTRA ROAD - The Skechers Ultra has found a following, and many of those runners have been waiting for a road version. Well, the wait is over. The Ultra Road takes its cue from the GOrun line - and particularly its trail counterpart - providing a ride that's springy as well as ultra cushioned. The upper is an engineered mesh called GOknit, which has open and closed areas across its surface to offer a good fit and breathability. The midsole has a tall stack height of 32 millimeters in the heel. It is soft, but surprisingly responsive, and of course well-cushioned, though it is not designed for wobbly feet. The outersole is full-length Resalyte, which is tougher than it looks, but even so, it is backed up by strategically placed dots of carbon rubber for added durability, as per other GOrun road models. The result is a shoe that can handle your big road miles and recovery days with equal ease.

Testers: "Fit really quite well; snugged up with good wiggle room. Super squishy, but not too mushy. Weird, but they run really well, and keep you going on easy days or long days with protection from the road."

Sizes: Men 7-13, 14; Women 6-10, 11
Weight: 11.8 oz. (men's size 11); 9.6 oz. (women's size 8)
Shape: semi-curved
Construction: Strobel slip-lasted
Recommended for: medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics

THIS MONTH'S RECOMMENDED EVENTS

JANUARY 6 - The Non Valley is the land of apples, grana cheese, castles, forests and... snowshoes. More than forty years ago the idea of a running race with snowshoes - "ciaspole" in Italian - started from the intuition of Alessandro Bertagnolli, the former director of the local turist office, and La Ciaspolada has now become the most popular event on the snow in all of Italy. It is an international 7k run on the white trails of the Trentino region. No snowshoes? No problem - you can rent them.

JANUARY 24 - The Mugello GP run consists in one or two loops of the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello, a race track circuit in Tuscany property of Scuderia Ferrari which uses it for Formula One testing. The length of the track is 5.245 kilometers. It has 15 turns and a long straight. The event features a shorter kids run on the go-kart track.
