IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

What better energy than a sliver of Parmigiano-Reggiano can a runner find to prepare for the next race? And what better spokesperson than Stefano Baldini, born and raise in the region where the "king of cheeses" is produced? Baldini was the Olympic marathon winner in Athens (2004), twice European marathon champion (1998, 2006) and the world champion in the half marathon (1996). Aged an average of two years, the delicious source of energy he endorses is made from unpasteurized cow's milk and it is named after the cities of Parma and Reggio Emilia ("parmigiano" is the Italian adjective for Parma and "reggiano" that for Reggio Emilia).

WHERE TO RUN IN BOLOGNA

Since I live near the stadium, I usually run along the pedestrian/bicycle path next to the Stadio Dall'Ara. The course borders the Reno river channel, almost parallel to via Porrettana. The path ends in Casalecchio, after approximately three and a half kilometers, but if you cross the street you can enter the Talon park and continue running there. The park features several trails and a paved road.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

LA SPORTIVA HELIOS SR - The Helios SR is a new shoe that builds on the design of some of La Sportiva's most successful recent models. It bears a resemblance to its sibling, the Helios, but features a few new bells and whistles. The upper is closed mesh with welded overlays, the thickest of which makes up the saddle. The tongue is gusseted, and the interior linings are smooth against the foot. The midsole is injection-molded EVA in a wave-like configuration that flexes well and adds traction to the outersole by its shape. The outersole is a sticky rubber formulation and lends the "SR" to the name; the heel portion is La Sportiva's Frixion rubber. The combination of these two compounds, along with multidirectional lugs and the negative space created by the sole's geometry, provide effective traction. This is an effective, lightweight trail goat that's a racer as well as a nimble performance flyer.

Testers: "Great racer fit. Very flexible, nicely cushioned, low profile. This one can really fly."

Sizes: Men 7-13, 14, 15; Women 6-11
Weight: 8.9 oz. (men's size 11); 7.3 oz. (women's size 8)
Shape: semi-curved
Construction: Strobel slip-lasted, EVA Strobel board
Recommended for: medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics

THIS MONTH'S RECOMMENDED EVENTS

MARCH 6 - The Trail dei Marganai trail is a 25k and a 45k event in the forest between Domusnovas and Iglesias, on the island of Sardinia. Not a long time ago this area was well known for its minerals and, even if the landscape is strongly marked by mining facilities and villages, it still preserves its original natural beauty, featuring archeological remains of the prehistorical civilization and a temple dating back to the Carthaginian-Roman time, known as the temple of Antas, dedicated to the local divinity Babai.

MARCH 20 - The idea of the Stramilano emerged from a 43k night-time "fun walk" that Renato Cepparo organized in 1972 for his family and friends. Decades later, this event is known as the "Stramilano of the 50,000" as this is the number of participants you could expect to share the 10k and 5k courses with. The start is from Piazza Duomo with the thunder of the horse artillery regiment's cannon and the ever-present fanfare of the Bersaglieri. Over 1500 athletes from the Italian army traditionally run the half marathon course.

MARCH 28 - From Cividale del Friuli (capital of the Lombard kingdom) through Palmanova (Venician fortress dating back to the 1500s) to Aquileia (strategic frontier fortress to protect the Romans during the invasion of Hannibal) the Unesco cities marathon delivers what its title promises, featuring a full marathon, a relay race (26k + 16k) and a shorter 16k option to discover three World Heritage Sites.
