IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

When organizing a marathon in Rome, why not invite the Pope itself? That said, the president of the "Maratona di Roma", Enrico Castrucci, approached Papa Francesco offering the first of the 17,000 medals mint for the marathoners. The Pope placed the medal around his neck. On the day of the marathon. On race day then, from piazza San Pietro, Papa Francesco publicly welcomed all participants with the words "Saluto tutti i partecipanti alla maratona".

WHERE TO RUN IN FERRARA

Start from the Parco di Teodorico and go towards the "darsena" (dock). Cross the bridge that goes over the railroad. Continue running to via Sant'Alberto, until you reach the underpass, then turn in the direction of the kennel. Follow the road to the low income houses ("case popolari"), and then head back to the Teodorico park.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

ZOOT MAKAI - Many of Zoot's best running shoes developed from their Triathlon tradition. The new Makai is a top quality running shoe that has serious triathlon chops. The upper is a moccasin-like design of closed mesh, with breathability and light, but sturdy enough to hold its shape in the forefoot without overlays. The interior has a smooth feel essential to its sockless Tri requirement, and a bungy-lace closure for rapid transition getaway. The rearfoot has the anchoring properties, though just enough for support and to secure the internal structure, with overlays sweeping into a thermoplastic heel counter then up to the top of the lace throat. The tongue is a more ventilated mesh, to allow the foot to breathe effectively. The midsole is a high quality Z-Bound+, in two densities, firm under the entire heel, resilient up front, and durable enough to go long. The outersole is carbon rubber in the heel continuing with a strip through the middle of the forefoot and at the toe, with toughened foam lugs medially and laterally. The Makai is a versatile and protective performance shoe that is effective for tempo runs, longer races, and a good measure of daily training for serious runners and triathletes.

Testers: "Soft feel against the foot, with plenty of toeroom. Responsive feel, but with good cushioning. Light for a training shoe, but quick enough for faster running."

MAY 15 - The small Isola del Giglio is located in the southern corner of the Tuscan Archipelago, 10 miles from the mainland. The Giglio trail features an 11k and a 27k course around this island, famous not only for its sandy beaches, the uncontaminated countryside, and its mineral ore (many columns and buildings in Rome were built with the island's granite), but also for the running aground in 2012 of the cruise liner Costa Concordia, just off the beautiful island's shore.
