IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

Who said you should carboload only before the race? At a trail run in Prato participants were served "ribollita" along the course. The "ribollita" is a famous Tuscan thick soup (think bread pudding) that can be eaten even at room temperature drizzled with some extravirgin olive oil. There are many variations, but the main ingredients always include bread, cannellini beans and vegetables such as carrot, cabbage, chard, kale, and onion. Like most dishes in the Tuscan cuisine, the soup has peasant origins (some sources date it back to the Middle Ages). The "ribollita" is prepared by adding leftover bread and reheating ("reboiling", thus its name) the "minestrone" or vegetable soup from the day before.

WHERE TO RUN IN FORLÌ

This course is 1.3k long (out and back). Starting from one of the external corners of the sport field, run along the grass trail surrounding the Polisportivo Otello Buscherini park. The park is located in Via Orceoli 17.

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

CARSON IGUANA RACER - Carson is a new brand that makes minimal, zero drop shoes, in the United States. The Iguana Racer, like the brand, is new, a little wild, and different from other racers. The upper is a closed mesh with a sublimated graphic of a lizard's eye and scales on each side, supported by minimal supports at the heel and toe. The fit is generous without feeling too loose or sloppy, thanks to the sueded ankle collar and foam, but leans toward the neutral footed without heel counter or external support. The midsole and outersole are made from a polyurethane blend which doubles for both traction and cushioning. The midsole is a low profile 10 millimeter stack height that flexes well with minimal, though a decent amount of cushioning. The platform is full-contact to get as much stability and traction from the sole as possible. The outersole is covered with low profile lugs which grip well on the road, but even better on natural surfaces. While a bit heavier than some other racers, many will find the Iguana Racer one of the more versatile. Orders are through the website, including the fitting process, at carsonfootwear.com.

Testers: "Good fit, secure but not tight anywhere. Good traction especially in the dirt or on trails. Enough cushion for racing, but not so thin that they can't take more. Great graphics!"

Sizes: Men 8-13, 14; Women 6-9
Weight: 8.9 oz. (men's size 11); 7.2 oz. (women's size 8)

JUNE 2 - Monferrato, part of the region of Piemonte in Northern Italy, is one of the most famous Italian wine regions in the world, especially regarding red wines and sparkling wines - think Barbera d'Asti, Asti spumante, Moscato d'Asti, Cortese, Malvasia, and Grignolino. The Quattro colli Monferrato held in Camagna features a 15k competitive run and a 7k fun run on a panoramic course through this Unesco World Heritage site.  JUNE 10 - The Dolomiti Extreme Trail in Forno di Zoldo (Belluno), right in the heart of the Dolomites, features three high-altitude events: a 103k ultramarathon, a 53k and a 23k trail runs. It is a magical journey, full of emotions, in an uncontaminated environment declared a Unesco World Heritage site. Due to its circular structure, the Val di Zoldo boasts a ring-shaped route that allows one to touch some of the most spectacular dolomite massifs that crowns the valley: the Mezzodì group, the San Sebastiano and Tamer mountains, the Moiazza, the Civetta, mount Pelmo, the Bosco Nero group, and mount Rite with the "Museum in the Clouds" (Messner Mountain Museum).

JUNE 26 - If you are a history buff, then the Trail del Carso, 32 cippi per ricordare in Gradisca d'Isonzo is the race for you. The 14k and 7k trail courses have been designed to explore the sites of many of the World War I battles. The event name means "32 memorial stones to remember" and winds through the open-air museum of the mount San Michele sacred area featuring carved stones to remember Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers killed in action in 1916.
