IN ITALY WE RUN LIKE THIS

The prize for each participant to the "Trofeo Alta Santerno" run in Firenzuola, small town on the mountains between the regions of Toscana and Emilia Romagna, is a "filoncino", the coveted loaf of local bread.

WHERE TO RUN IN FORLÌ

A nice track, not paved, winds from the Rabbi bridge in Porta Schiavonia along the Montone river. The start is by the urban park Franco Agosto and the course measures a bit more than three kilometers (km 3,100 to be precise).

RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

ADIDAS PURE BOOST - The success of adidas' Boost foam has rested on the protective ride and performance feel it provides. The new Pure Boost X is designed to address a common fit issue women experience, so it is available only in women's sizes. The stretchy knit upper is supported by no-sew overlays. The innovation is in detaching the midfoot from the midsole and wrapping the arch so the shoe fits snugly. The rationale? A well-designed fit and support can reduce plantar fascia issues, but they also provide a smooth ride, thanks to the foot-hugging fit. The midsole is single-density Boost foam with its expected resilience, cushioning, and durability. The outersole is a thin, lightweight, grippy layer of Continental rubber - and it is durable, too. We applaud this innovation of the Pure Boost X and were not surprised that it earned our award for Best Summer Shoe 2016.

Testers: "The fit is better than any shoe I have tried - it hugs the foot amazingly well. Fit well. Great cushion. I love this shoe!"

THIS MONTH'S RECOMMENDED EVENTS

AUGUST 6 - A fascinating fun run is held in the evening in Treschè Conca, in the province of Vicenza. The race La vaca mora, literally "the black cow" (this is how the local farmers nicknamed the steam locomotive), is a point-to-point 10k along the old local railroad. The course is entirely lit with torches.

AUGUST 12 - If you like trail or skyrunning, do not miss the Scarfiotti/Sommeiller. It is a 7k point-to-point mountain race. The start is from the alpine shelter Scarfiotti, near the town of Bardonecchia, on the border with France. The finish is more than one kilometer uphill, on the top of the Sommeiller mountain near the glacier bearing the same name. After the race is over, runners will need to return by foot along the same route.

AGOSTO 20 - Ask any Italian, and they all will know Brescello, a small town in the Reggio Emilia province, hosting the Camminata di Peppone e don Camillo. The two characters to whom this fun run is dedicated are from a popular humorous book (and then movie) series written by Giovannino Guareschi. The popular stories center on the hot-tempered priest Don Camillo and his eternal rivalry with Giuseppe "Peppone" Bottazzi, the Communist mayor of a small town in post-World War II Italy, where everybody knows everybody.
