RUNNING SHOES REVIEW

BROOKS MAZAMA - The new Brooks Mazama is named for an ancient volcano in Oregon and the name is synonymous with trail adventures in the Northwest. The shoe is the lightest Brooks trail shoe to date, though it's no lightweight. The upper is semi-open mesh with 3D printed overlays for structure, a thermoplastic toe bumper for protection. A stiffer, closed mesh forms a full rand for durability and another thin layer between you and the trail. The gussetted tongue is thin and flexible, sealing the upper from trail debris. The midsole consists of two layers of foam, both are responsively firm. The top layer, in the forefoot and nearest the foot, allows good flexibility, without feeling too stiff. The bottom layer sandwiches a propulsion plate, which works with the outersole for a snappy feel, and doubles as a rock shield. The outersole features a lug pattern not used in a Brooks trail shoe before. The forefoot features a network of spines running longitudinally with toothy lugs, the negative space creating additional traction, lightened and protected by the thermoplastic plate. The heel is solid rubber, but the forefoot and rearfoot can flex independently of each other in response to uneven ground. The bottom line is that the Mazama has a snug, almost racer-like fit, a firm responsive ride, and great traction, which earned our award for Best Trail Shoe.

Testers: "Nice fit, snug but not too snug. Good flex and really digs in on the traction. They were my first choice for fast trail running"

APRIL 9 - You are probably familiar with the expression "All roads lead to Rome". Well, the Roma Appia Run features a 4k and a 13k course on the Appia Antica, one of the earliest and strategically most important Roman roads of the ancient Republic. It connected Rome to Brindisi, in southeast Italy, and was used as a main route to transport troops and military supplies outside Roma since its construction in 312 bC. In the 1960 Summer Olympics, the Appia Antica served as part of the men's marathon course that was won by the Ethiopian Abebe Bikila.

APRIL 23 - Marsala is more than just a veal sauce. The Maratonina del vino (Wine Half Marathon) in Marsala, a city near Trapani, will offer foreign runners the opportunity to visit the place where it all began: thanks to the English trader John Woodhouse who discovered it would last on long ocean voyages, the renown Marsala wine - fortified like Port, Madeira and Sherry - became famous first in England and then worldwide. Golden, amber, ruby - these are some of the different dry or sweet varieties of Marsala wine you can enjoy drinking after the run.
